George F. Bergmann, age 93 of Bartelso, passed away at Carlyle Healthcare and Senior Living on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
Mr. Bergmann was born in East St. Louis on December 30, 1932, a son of Frank and Anna B. Schmitt Bergmann. He married Joan Marie Zachry on April 23, 1960, and she survives in Bartelso.
In addition to his wife, Joan, George is survived by his children, Michael T. Bergmann and wife Ann of Freeburg, Anthony J. Bergmann and wife Michelle of Bartelso, Julie McLain of East Alton, Angela Franke and husband Jeff of Belleville, and Andrew Bergmann and wife Deanne of New Athens; a daughter-in-law, Jane Bergmann of Belleville; eight grandchildren, Allison Reichert and husband Scott, Aaron Bergmann and wife Kandyce, Kerry Menn and husband Billy, Nick Bergmann, Trevor Bergmann and wife Kate, Amanda Fritz and husband Brandon, Tyler Bergmann, and Duncan McLain and wife Cassady; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank W. Bergmann of Belleville; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Anna Bergmann; a son, Gregory F. Bergmann; a sister, Anna M. Leonard; and two sisters-in-law, Vivian Bergmann and Yvonne Zachry.
George was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle and an active member of the Bartelso Knights of Columbus, Council 4745. He found his greatest joy close to home, whether working on the farm or simply spending time with his family. George proudly served his country in the United States Navy and worked for many years as an auto mechanic following his service.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at St. Mary’s Church, 1171 Livingston Street, Carlyle, Illinois 62231. A committal service will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Carlyle. Visitation will be held at St. Mary’s Church on Thursday prior to the Mass from 9:00 to 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family suggests memorial donations in George’s memory to the St. Mary’s Church Building Fund.
