A rural Kinmundy home has been destroyed by a fire blamed on a trash fire being left unattended.
Kinmundy-Alma Fire Chief Kevin Day says the fire was in a rental home at 7823 King Road that is owned by Dennis Wilkerson of Salem and occupied by the Stewart family. Day reports no one was at home when the fire was discovered. The blaze apparently spread from the trash fire through the grass to the home.
Day says the fire was already moving through the home when the fire was discovered and the department responded. The fire got into the attic and basement and destroyed all of the family’s possessions.
The fire was reported at 1:39 Wednesday afternoon. Salem and Farina were called for mutual aid. Iuka Firemen stood by at the Kinmundy-Alma Fire Station in the event of another fire. Firemen cleared the scene at four Wednesday afternoon.
