Residents who live in the Jefferson Fire Protection District are invited to an open house Monday night to learn more about a bond issue on the March 17th primary ballot that would allow for construction of a new fire station.
Fire officials as well as architects on the new building will be on hand to answer questions between five and 7:30 pm.
The current fire station is a building built in 1948 for a car dealership and has been the home of the fire district since 1960. The replacement is being sought because the current building no longer meets modern safety standards and firefighters face increased exposure to cancer causing contaminants due to inadequate separation of living and work areas. Limited space and the outdated design create operational bottlenecks. The department also cites growing call volume and says community needs require a facility built for today and the future.
