The Salem Elks Lodge #1678 has announced the winners of this year’s annual Elks Americanism Essay Contest.
Chair Elizabeth Shuler says there were an astounding 171 essays submitted this year by Franklin Park, Iuka, Odin, Raccoon, Kell, South Central, Salem Apostolic Academy, and Selmaville students. The winners from the Salem Elks Lodge will advance to the district level, and if they win there, to the state and national level.
The sixth-grade winners who advance to the district are Lucas Howe from Selmaville School, son of Chelsie Howe and Caleb Howe; Scout Amason from Raccoon School, daughter of Justin and Natalie Amason; and Malia Howell from Franklin Park Middle School, daughter of Rachel Scarbrough.
Seventh-grade winners were McKenzie Mulvany from Selmaville School, daughter of Micah Mulvany; Cecillia Nolte from Selmaville School, the daughter of Ryan and Julie Nolte; and Amyah Williams from Raccoon School, daughter of Kristi Meisel and Darrian Williams.
Eighth-grade students advancing are Aislynn White from Franklin Park Middle School, daughter of Mariah White and Michael White; Kara Patton from Selmaville School, daughter of Michelle and Brice Patton; and Lilly Davis from Raccoon School, daughter of Jason and Amy Davis.
The theme of the nationwide contest this year is ‘What Does Service to Your Country Mean to You?. The Essays had to be no more than 300 words.
