The Salem Animal Control department says prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures can cause hypothermia, frostbite, and even death in animals, just like humans.

If you truly cannot bring a pet indoors, please make sure they have proper shelter raised off the ground, filled with straw for insulation, protected from wind and moisture and always supplied with unfrozen water and consistent food.

They also suggest checking on neighbors, elderly residents, and anyone with outdoor animals who may need help.

The Animal Control facility notes cold weather is not something pets can endure alone, they rely on humans to keep them safe, warm, and alive.
