The Salem City Council is moving forward with West Whitaker Street improvements, including a complete resurfacing of the road from South Pearl to South Broadway and completion of resurfacing, pavement patching, sidewalk ramp improvements from South College to Delmar.

The council entered agreements with Gonzalez Companies, LLC for engineering services on both projects with the cost to be paid from motor fuel tax funds.  Resolutions were passed to set aside $220,000 in federal aid urban funds for the resurfacing between South Broadway and South Pearl and $143,000 for improvements between South College and Delmar.

Public Works Director Travis Sanders says improvements from South College to Delmar could take place in the 2027 construction season and the South Pearl to South Broadway improvements the following year.

City council members noted only specific city streets in Salem are eligible for federal aid urban money and cannot be used on state highways or other city streets in worse conditions.
