The Raccoon Lake Association has set an action plan for the coming year.
President Tom Hawkins told the membership at a Thursday night meeting that focus areas will include lake cleanup, advocate for shoreline stabilization, raise public awareness of lake potential and preservation needs. To do so, they want to network with the community, present information, and participate in connecting people to Raccoon Lake.
Several motions were made to move some of the ideas forward.
The association agreed to ask the city to draw down the lake level this spring to allow for dock and shoreline maintenance. Hawkins noted a lot of work was able to be completed the last time the lake was lowered for work on the gates controlling the dam.
A signup sheet was passed among members willing to help with cleanup work to be completed from a small barge donated to the association.
The association also agreed to have a booth at the Centralia Chamber of Commerce Regional Business Expo on March 28th at the Kaskaskia College Gym. They want to provide the public more information on Raccoon Lake and the amount of wildlife available at the lake, including a large number of different bird species.
