The Wamac City Council took action Monday evening toward clearing out a backlog of records in the city’s possession.
According to officials, the city has been holding on to records, such as water bills, that date back to when the present Wamac City Hall opened approximately a decade and a half ago. During discussion of the issue, Mayor Jackie “Butch” Mathus advised the council that records would need to be retained dating back at least seven years to comply with Freedom of Information Act requirements. Police Chief Steve Prather recommended keeping records that are up to 10 years old, and the council ultimately voted to follow that recommendation.
Also on Monday, it was announced that City Treasurer Elisabeth Jackson will be serving as office help at city hall during at least the month of February, possibly into March, as City Clerk Marian Suhl will be out of the office for medical reasons. Jackson will be at city hall on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until noon.
Prather also reported to the council that one of the police department’s vehicles was heavily damaged last week in a collision with a deer and will need to be replaced.
