United Way of South Central Illinois is recognizing the generosity of Kell Grade School whose recent school-wide food drive collected enough non-perishable items to fill an entire SUV.

The donations will directly support United Way’s tiny pantries—small, community-centered food access points designed to provide immediate support to individuals and families facing food insecurity.

As part of the food drive, Kell CSD #2 held a competition among the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade classes. United Way visited the school to present awards to the top students. Through the United We Give program, and in partnership with Walgreens DC, the winners received pairs of earbuds as recognition for their outstanding participation and leadership.

The Executive Director of the United Way of South Central Illinois says the tiny pantries operate on a simple principle: ‘Take what you need, leave what you can.’  Shook says they intentionally place the tiny pantries low to the ground so children can access them easily. She says Kell CSD #2’s generosity will help sustain many families during the challenging winter months ahead.

United Way also highlights the pressing need for ongoing community support. “Some of the pantries are being refilled twice a day.   For residents without transportation, accessing a grocery store can be extremely difficult. These tiny pantries are vital, and community involvement is what keeps them going.”
