The Salem Community High School Board has approved a 3.75 percent increase in its property tax levy over what was collected last year.

Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering says the increase includes a 2.9-percent jump allowed by the Consumer Price Index along with capturing $2 million in property tax growth during the past year.   He reports the increase should generate $160,000 in new revenue.   Because of the property tax multiplier that will raise assessments, the district’s property tax rate is expected to drop nine cents to $1.65.

Detering reported the district is at a standstill with the city on an agreement that would have the city surplus of property tax revenue on residential properties in the new TIF-4 to the other taxing districts and write a letter of support for a 12-year extension of the downtown TIF-3 that will expire next year.   Detering said the city and its TIF attorney have not been helpful in working through issues and at this point there is no consensus to move forward.

The board was told attendance for October was 93.4-percent, with the assistant principal having contact with 57 students on discipline issues, nine of which resulted in out of school suspension.   Two of those nine students have not returned to the high school.  One is being home schooled and the other has gone to the alternative school.

The board appointed Levi Quinn as Assistant Girl’s Basketball Coach, Mike Russell as bass fishing coach and Trevor Corry as volunteer wrestling coach.
