The Iuka Grade School invited Veterans in the district to a special Veterans Day program on Monday. The school band played and students sang patriotic numbers while students along with Superintendent Derick Vincent expressed their appreciation to the Veterans for their service.
“Here at IGS, we spend a lot of time talking about important concepts: fortitude, love, and responsibility,” Vincent said. “Today, we see those big ideas walking among us. When a person chooses to become a veteran, they are choosing to put the well-being and safety of others before their own. They make a solemn promise, a vow to protect the freedoms we often take for granted. The freedom to go to school, the freedom to play in the park, the freedom to speak our minds.
Vincent said veterans are from all walks of life and are ordinary people who did something truly exemplary when they stepped up when our country needed them and made a contribution that should never be forgotten. Several students shared in reading messages of thanks to the veterans.
As the Iuka Band played the medley of songs representing each branch of members in that branch stood and received applause from the crowd.
The veterans were then served doughnuts and coffee at a reception that followed. Student artwork thanking the veterans was also on display.
