A smoldering fire in insulation in the attic of a rural Mt. Vernon home was confined to the attic area late Sunday night.
Jefferson Fire officials say the owner of the home went upstairs to the attic to grab some items when she smelled smoke. Firemen found the smoldering fire had started in the blown in insulation. The insulation was removed and part of the ceiling removed to reach all of the burning material.
The homeowner, whose name was not immediately available, was out of the home by the time firemen arrived.
While the fire was confined to the attic area, there was some minor smoke damage to the rest of the home.
The fire call came in at 10:30 Sunday night, with firemen on the scene for about two hours. Mt. Vernon City, Kell, and Centralia Fire Protection District were called to the scene for mutual aid. Bluford and Waltonville stood by at the Jefferson Fire station in the event of another fire.
