Marion County and the City of Centralia were able to work together to help a mother dog and 12 puppies that were found abandoned on the north side of Foundation Park on Monday.
Board Chair Steve Whritenour says Marion County Animal Control picked up the large crate holding the mom and pups but had no place to take them because the temporary facility holding dogs for the county doesn’t take puppies. He says Centralia City Manager Galen Mahle and Community Development Director Gayla Harding, who oversees the Centralia Animal Pound, came to the rescue and found a secure room to house the mom and pups altogether at the Centralia Animal Pound. The pound’s volunteers will now work to prepare the now three- to four-week-old lab-pit bull mix puppies for adoption.
Whritenour says he cannot thank the city enough for their assistance.
Right now, Marion County has no animal control facility and Centralia no animal control officer. The two are currently talking about further cooperation.
