The Centralia Orphans got an interception that led to the opening points of their IHSA opening round home playoff game with Cahokia, but the Comanches ground attack was too much as they would get their 2nd win of the year over Centralia 44-22.

The Orphans trailed big at the half, but came out in the second half with poise and fought their way back.  After a Archie Goewey to Kruz Jackson touchdown the Orphans would get a score from Will Stanton to cut the deficit to 22-38 early in the fourth.  The Orphans would then get a fumble recovery and looked as though they would get the game down to one score.  However, the Orphans were called for a controversial offensive pass interference call that led to an interception and the end of the Orphans hopes for a comeback.

Cahokia advances to next week’s 2nd round when they get a home game against Jacksonville who upset top-seed Olney 41-39 in an amazing game.

The Tigers trailed Jacksonville 34-12 at the halftime break, but a second half for the ages from Olney senior quarterback Gavyn Cothern led the Tigers back and had the ball down two in the final moments before the Crimson would get a game ending interception to win 41-39.

Also in 4a, Breese Central rolled past Columbia 48-15 and will host another Cahokia school in Freeburg in round 2 after their win at home over Highland 46-36.

Carterville beat Marquette 42-14.

Controversy in Petersburg

The Fairfield Mules looked as though they were going to win their opening round playoff game at PORTA, but an officiating gaffe allowed the home team to kick a field goal at the end of the game, which occurred on 5th down.

PORTA running back Josh Carr ran for 2 yards up the middle on 2nd down. They quickly scrambled to spike the ball on third down, except the quarterback’s knee hit the ground with about 10 seconds left.  The ref’s correctly called the kneel, but the down never changed.  The QB then spiked the ball on what should’ve been 4th down.

Fairfield has protested the end of the game to the IHSA but precedent is not on their side.

IHSA bylaws state that decisions of game officials are final and protests against the decision of a game official shall not be reviewed by its board of directors under Section 6.033.
