A vacant Centralia home received substantial damage in a Wednesday morning fire.
The fire began in the basement of the home at 133 South Hickory. It was first discovered by a passerby. Centralia City Firemen say upon arrival flames were showing from a basement window. The initial firefighting effort was from outside the home, until two firefighters made their way into the basement and knocked down the rest of the fire.
Firemen say everything in the basement was destroyed. The fire had also spread to the kitchen before it was stopped. The rest of the home sustained smoke damage.
The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical in nature.
All available Centralia City Firemen were called in. The Centralia Fire Protection District was called for mutual aid assistance on the scene. Sandoval Firemen covered the Centralia fire station in the event of another fire.
The fire call came in at 11:30 Wednesday morning, with firemen on the scene for about two and a half hours.
