The Marion County Board’s Community Relations Committee Tuesday night discussed how to implement the opening up of the appointment process for positions that need county board approval.

Committee member Dr. Michael Douglas outlined the procedure he’d like to see followed using the county website.

“The appointees should have their terms, and then an announcement on the web page when it is due.  What most counties do is have a small resume, like a 100-word resume, on why you are qualified and why you want the position.  Those are submitted to the administrator of that department and forwarded to us.  They can make a recommendation, but if Mike Douglas looks at a health board member that I think is more qualified, I get to vote. ”

The committee was in general agreement with Douglas’ concept.

Board Chair Steve Whritenour was hoping to have a sample policy on the appointment process from the State’s Attorney, but it is not yet complete.   Since the written policy isn’t ready, the board agreed to recommend the reappointment to the full board of two members of the board of review, John Wright and Patrick Kyker.   Supervisor of Assessment Mark Miller their terms need to be approved before the board of review goes into session on tax complaints next month.

Four reappointments to the Marion County Health Department Board, which were before the board at its last meeting when the board voted to utilize the new process, are still held up. Whritenour says once the word got out, he had three people ask about joining the health board. He says that shows the interest some may have in the positions if they knew they were open.  Whritenour said after the new procedure was approved at the last meeting, he had three who were interested in being appointed to the Marion County Health Board the next day.
