The Centralia City School Board approved a two-year fixed-rate natural gas contract with Constellation Energy at its regular board meeting on Tuesday. The item on the agenda had been tabled at the last meeting to get more information from Affordable Gas and Electric on the different rates available.
Jordan Haarmann was present to answer questions on behalf of AGE and told the board that natural gas prices were unlikely to decrease over the next several years. After some discussion, with options between a one-year and four-year contract, the board approved a two-year contract and chose to include, as usual, a 100 percent swing that will prevent the district’s cost from spiking in the event of increased usage, such as during extreme winter weather.
In the curriculum report, assistant superintendent Beth Hollenkamp reports that the school district continues to participate in the Regional Office of Education’s instructional coaching program, with the ROE coach currently focused on math support. The district is also collecting data about writing across the district, conducting a survey, and collecting writing samples from students to assess the current strength of writing district-wide.
The board hired Cedric Webster as CJHS Vocal Music Director, Shaina Hocking as Homebound Teacher, Kellie Linder as Homebound Teacher, Kelli Rightnowar Jackson as Individual Paraprofessional, and Nichole Hixson as Girls’ 7th grade basketball coach.
The board accepted a letter of intent to retire from Schiller school secretary Diane Rush.
The school board’s next meeting is scheduled for November 4, which has been moved up a week due to Veteran’s Day.
