A large garbage compacter used at a landfill caught fire while being serviced inside Fabick Tractor on West Main in Salem Tuesday morning. Salem Assistant Fire Chief Bill Fulton says damage appears limited to wiring on the machine.
“Apparently, they were doing some work on it using a torch, cutting some pans off so they could get to the issues that they were having mechanically with this,” Fulton said. “Apparently, there was still some trash up in there from the landfill, and that caught fire. The employees did a really good job keeping it at bay with garden hoses until we could get here and get it knocked down.”
Fulton says there was no damage to the building and any damage to the machine appears to have been limited to the wiring. Odin Firemen provided mutual aid assistance at the scene.
Traffic was detoured off West Main Street while fire equipment was staged for the fire.
