Kaskaskia College showed off its renovated Salem Education Center on Thursday following flood damage that occurred during a storm that dumped around nine inches of rain in the Salem area.

College President George Evans addressed the flooding during a meeting of the Salem Advisory Committee.

“In total, the insurance bill was about $300,000 dollars to replace carpet, to flood cut, replace paint, furniture and so on,” Evans said. “We are up and running again, we are back full circle completely.”

Vice President of Student Services Amy Zanton says while they were able to move most of the classes to complete the spring semester back to the main campus, there were special issues for the Adult Education Classes.

“Our adult education program serves a more vulnerable population generally,” Zanton said, “and being able to have proximity to the class here locally was very important for those students, some of whom have transportation issues, walk here. As we were exploring venues, the library came to mind, and they were very hospitable. They housed us free of charge and helped us to not miss a beat when it came to serving that adult ed population of students.”

Zanton presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Bryan Bennett Librarian Jodi Trinkle following her remarks.
