A vacant Mt. Vernon home was destroyed by fire Tuesday night.

Mt. Vernon firemen say heavy smoke was coming out all sides of the home at 1103 South 22nd upon their arrival.  Flames were shooting out of the rear roof.   Multiple lines were laid to fight the fire, but firemen ended up having to fight the blaze defensively until they could knock it down.

No other property was threatened, and no injuries were reported.

There were no utilities to the home that had been empty about a year.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.

Jefferson Fire provided mutual aid on the scene, while Kell and Waltonville Firemen stood by at the Mt. Vernon Fire Station in the event of another fire.

The fire call came in at 6:51 Tuesday night, with firemen on the scene for about two hours.
