The Marion County Relay for Life finished the Saturday event shy of their $50,000 goal but hoping to add more.

Co-coordinator Sheila Mulvaney made the announcement of money raised so far at the end of the evening.

“We have a total of fundraising as of this date of $37,196,” Mulvaney said.

Mulvaney says $9,000 was raised during the event plus whatever is added when money from the cakewalk is counted on Monday.

This was the 40th year for the Marion County Relay and Beth Orrell of the Committee provided a toast with the cancer survivors in attendance:

“Raise your glass to the caretakers who care for us, to the family and friends who love us, and to the survivors who inspire us. Cheers to 40 more years.”

There were 12 teams in this year’s event.  600 luminarias were sold, up from 512 last year.

Teams have until November to add additional contributions.
