The Salem City Council will be asked to surplus its animal control facility at 4700 Cartter Road in Kell and put it up for sale to the highest bidder.
City Manager Lisa Peck confirms Marion County is interested in the building as the county animal control facility. The location of the facility, so far out of town, was a concern first voiced by former City Manager Annette Sola, who had suggested the county should buy the building rather than the two working together on animal control.
The city could move its facility closer to town, with the old animal control facility on South Walnut or at the closed landfill facility at the end of Lake Street, two possibilities.
Marion County officials have been trying to find a location for a dog pound after ending an agreement with the City of Centralia last year to house its dogs. Board Chair Steve Whritenour said he would have no comment on the discussions since they have been conducted in closed session.
