The Salem Wildcats soccer team played their very first game on the new pitch at the Salem Soccer Complex in front of a huge crowd, and they knocked off visiting 2nd ranked and undefeated Highland 2-1.
Salem scored early on a great cross from Robby Shober to Eli Baker in the box to make it 1-0. In the second half, Salem would get another goal from Baker, this time on a pass from Caleb Purintun. It’s Baker’s 13th goal in 5 games for the Cats.
The back line defense was great for the Wildcats all game long, and Corey Keele made some big saves in net.
After giving up a goal with 8 minutes left, the game was back and forth the rest of the way. Salem is 4-1 and will open Cahokia play Saturday at 11am at home against Roxana.
The Salem JV lost 2-1 in the match after the varsity game. Kam Rasul had the Salem goal.
Also in prep soccer, Altamont nips Carlyle 2-1, Effingham 13-0 over Vandalia and Triad shutout Granite City 7-0.
