The Salem City Council Tuesday night approved a $376,042 contract with Milano and Grunloh Engineers, LLC to design a new street designed to open up the southwest quadrant of the I-57 interchange to development.
Maverick Street will run from Main Street at the I-57 southbound exit ramp south before turning west to rejoin Hotze Road. The total length of the street is just a half mile.
Mayor Nic Farley feels the street can be important to economic development.
“We’ve seen some interest from developers,” Farley said. “So, we think it’s a good first step in helping to better market that area.”
This is just the first step to getting the street constructed which could take a few years to complete.
The council approved a $57,200 low bid from Century Fence Company to put a new fence around the Public Works Department in Tully Park. The existing fence has been damage by improvements to the public works facility.
New Salem Patrolman Brett Niepoetter was sworn in. He has completed the police academy and is now in field training before being able to work on his own.
