Fire heavily damaged the kitchen of a Centralia home where electricity had just been turned on Tuesday morning for those who were just moving into the home.

Firefighters say the fire was at a home just occupied by Lylyn Torrez and Marrisa Kelly at 623 Dimick.  One of the new occupants was asleep on the couch when he woke to see the kitchen on fire.  It apparently started in items placed on the stove during the move in process.    Firemen believe the stove had been in the on position when power was disconnected leading to the burners coming on when electricity was restored and starting the fire about 20 minutes later that spread to other parts of the kitchen.

The rest of the home received some smoke damage.

Both of the occupants were out of the house when the fire department arrived.

Ameren was called to the scene to disconnect the power and gas while Centralia Police provided security and road blockage.

The home is owned by Robert Phillips of Centralia.
