The Salem Community High School Board Monday night received an update on summer construction projects and damage from a late July lightning strike on the school.

Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering says they are still finding some damage from the July 24th lightning strike.

“After the lightning strike, we had issues with the fire panel and all of the sensors in the ducts and smoke detectors,” Detering said. “We’ve had some motherboards in the HVAC units that have had to be replaced in order to get them talking to the computer system that runs them. We did have some wi-fi access points that were fried, and so we’re putting all of those things together as part of the insurance claim.

Detering does not yet have a total damage figure.

He reports the summer construction projects have mostly wrapped up.

“The window project is completed as well as the refurbishing and repainting of the auto shop/wood shop building,” Detering said. “We are still working on the tuck-pointing project. It’s down into the gym area now, it’s no longer in any of the academic areas. We are putting the finishing touches on the chemistry and biology lab renovations. Those are all pretty much down to punch list and minor details. Both rooms are operable and have had students in them from the first day with students.”

Detering says remaining work will be completed during no school hours.

The school board also reviewed its tentative budget which will be available for review prior to a vote at the September meeting.

“With the tentative budget, we’ve got deficits in the education fund and the building fund,” Detering said. “The education fund deficit was a little bit more than $41,000, and the deficit in the building fund was just a little under $40,000. We’ve got a little bit of work to do there, but I’m confident that we should be able to overcome that and probably bring those in balanced. We can offset those with our working cash monies that come in, but then we’re also still looking at continuation of the projects that are still going on and being able to do everything that we can to cash flow those projects.”

The board also acted on a number of personnel issues.  Stacy Lux resigned as girls’ softball coach.  Rob Ring was named head wrestling coach and Brian Camp as assistant wrestling coach.
