The Centralia City Council will be asked Monday night to allow for a mural honoring the five Centralia men who played on the Globetrotters.

The mural would be placed on a city owned building in Laura Leake Park.

The Centralia Juneteenth Committee, in partnership with the Centralia Chamber of Commerce Image Committee and local artist Jamie Allen, has proposed the mural to celebrate community culture, history, and community spirit.

The five Centralia Players are Bobby Joe Mason, Fred Pearson, Ken ‘Preacher’ McBride, John ‘Buddy’ Scott and Jackie White.

The proposal was presented to the Parks and Recreation Committee with their recommendation to approve it.  The cost of the project is estimated between $5,000 to $10,000 with the Centralia Image Committee and Centralia Juneteenth Committee providing 100% of the funds.

The project is expected to be completed in June 2026 with an unveiling at the 2026 Juneteenth Celebration.

The city council Monday night will also consider issuing a Class ‘A’ liquor license for package and retail sale to the Colden Brewery that will be opening in a renovated building at 117 East Broadway and allowing Rollin Up at 320 East Noleman to trade in their Class C license for a Class A license to allow for the addition of video gaming.  The board will also eliminate a Class E license as a result of the closure of Sergio’s restaurant and eliminating a Class F license following the closure of Centralia Tobacco and Liquor.  The Class C license is the one held by Rollin Up prior to upgrading to a Class A license.

The council will consider up to a $12,000 forgivable TIF #3 loan to RE: Purpose Development for facade improvements to the downtown building at 117 East Broadway soon to be occupied by Colden Brewery.  The total cost of the facade improvements is placed at $25,415.

The Centralia City Council meets at six Monday night at Centralia City Hall.
