The Centralia Police Department conducted a focused traffic safety campaign July 8th through August 1st to remind motorists that “Speeding Catches Up With You” and encourage safer driving habits.
The campaign was part of a statewide effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police, aiming to reduce highway fatalities and injuries associated with speeding.
During this enforcement period, Centralia PD issued:
- 52 speeding citations
- 8 seat belt citations
- 8 child car seat citations
- 1 suspended/revoked driver arrests
– 9 other citations for miscellaneous offenses
Centralia Police Lieutenant Steve Whritenour says they will continue to urge all drivers traveling through Centralia to slow down, obey speed limits and drive responsibly. He says every decision you make behind the wheel matters — it’s truly not a game.
This campaign aligns with IDOT’s broader “It’s Not a Game” initiative, emphasizing that dangerous driving behaviors have serious consequences.
This speed enforcement effort was funded by federal highway safety dollars administered by IDOT.
