The Marion County 4-H Auction livestock sale at the fair Wednesday night had winning bids totaling $129,800 for the 95 animals on the block. That was just shy of the $131,500 in top bids last year.
Among those with animals on the auction block were the county’s new Junior Miss Jane Taylor Rose and Fair Queen Ella Douglas.
“It’s an annual project that we put our blood sweat and tears into. Auction day just means everything to us with our community support,” Douglas said.
“Exactly what Ella said. It’s kind of just something that you work for all year long,” Rose said. “Once you get the chance to get out there and then people buy it for as much money as they do sometimes, it really feels so great. Sometimes it gets very emotional when people buy.”
In addition, local businesses donated an additional $4,200 to the Marion County 4-H Foundation.
With the sale, 4-H members begin to prepare for the next 4-H year that begins in the fall.
