The Salem City Council Monday night swore in a new police officer.
Nathan Eck has been a police officer in Flora for the past five years. As a result, he starts with the field training program for new officers and should be ready to be on the streets by himself in six weeks.
Eck fills one of six openings on the department. Three more are in the final process of being hired to begin the police academy. The department hopes to be back to full force by spring.
