The Salem City Council has approved bids to complete water and sewer improvements.

The City Council Monday night awarded Furlong Excavating a $332,000 contract to replace waterlines on Rotan, Jennings and Bryan Streets.  Haier Plumbing and Heating in Okawville received a $169,000 contract to replace sanitary sewer lines that have partially collapsed near West Whitaker and Walnut Streets.

The council approved three Tax Increment Financing District projects.  Cindy Quinn and Quinn Realty will receive $20,000 in converting the former library building at 402 South Broadway into her new office.  The building needs brickwork, a new roof and painting.   The council agreed to give Paul and Lynn Riehm $35,000 of the remaining $70,000 they will receive for renovating two buildings in the 300 block of West Main Street now to allow for the work to get done more quickly.   Brice McGee, who owns the Odd Fellows’ building at 115 East Main will be $750 reimbursed half the cost of painting the outside of the building.

A city ordinance was approved to make it illegal to discard any ‘grass clippings, trimmings, or any other debris’ from the maintenance of their property onto the street, floodway, ditch, culvert or storm water sewer.   Violators can receive tickets.   In the past, the city had to rely on a similar state law.

The board passed a resolution declaring Saturday, October 4th, as Little Egypt Festival Day.

The board approved an agreement with Moran Economic Development to work on any needed project at a rate of $150 an hour.

Jim Cerny was appointed to an open seat on the planning commission.
