United Way of South Central Illinois has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Illinois Charitable Trust Stabilization Fund to support two large-scale Employment and Resource Fairs — one in Mt. Vernon and one in Salem.

The Executive Director of the United Way, Natalie ‘Nat’ Shook, says the events will be designed to connect job seekers with local employers, training opportunities, and support services such as childcare, transportation, and financial literacy.

Shook says these events are about more than handing out applications.  She says they are focused on removing barriers and creating real opportunity. Whether someone needs resume help or legal assistance, the goal is to make it all available under one roof.

As part of this initiative, United Way is also exploring the inclusion of expungement clinics, where individuals with certain non-violent criminal records — such as minor drug charges — could begin the process of clearing their record with the help of legal professionals.

This component is meant to expand access to meaningful employment for individuals who are often excluded due to past offenses.

“It’s important to note that not everyone qualifies for expungement,” Shook emphasized. “But for those who do, this can be life-changing — and a huge benefit to employers who need dedicated, reliable workers.”

United Way is partnering with the Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce, and Greater Salem, Illinois Chamber of Commerce to co-host and organize the events.

Venue planning is underway in both Mt. Vernon and Salem, with efforts to secure spaces large enough to accommodate employers, service providers, and expungement support areas.   Event dates, locations, and participation details will be released soon.
