The eight pm curfew for those 16 and under without a parent in Kinmundy has apparently worked in solving a vandalism problem with kids as young as eight in the community.
Police Chief Joe Duffy says after the board created the curfew ordinance at its meeting last month, there has not been a single vandalism issue.
“The parents are involved, and now that we have the parents out there with the children, when their out past curfew, their being held accountable for the kids actions. That has completely stopped all the vandalism and the little crimes, the breaking of people’s windows, and destroying of other people’s property. It’s just stopped it.”
Mayor Angie Diss doesn’t feel the ordinance is excessive and has worked out well to keep kids home at night.
“If it is a religious function, a school function, work, or anything like that, then they have a special waver. The curfew rule won’t apply. I am very thankful that the parents and children in our town are cooperating, and we are turning it around.”
Diss told the Kinmundy Board of Alderman Thursday night with the kids now under control, she wants to do something to thank them.
“On august second we are going to have a family fun day in the park we are going to have four very large waterslides, free food, snow cones, and whatever else we can come up with. It’s all going to be in the park from eleven to two.”
Diss is getting contributions from the business community to pay for the fun day.
The board refined the curfew ordinance at its meeting Thursday night after hastily putting it together to immediate address the problems last month.
