A Salem home was damaged in an early Saturday morning fire discovered by a Salem Police Officer on patrol.
Salem Police say at first it was believed smoke was coming from an outbuilding, but when he got closer, he found smoke and flames were coming from an addition to a home at Two Deer Path Drive. The fire department was called, and the officer then woke up the two occupants, Dovie Kirtley and Nick Benjamin, who were unaware the house was on fire.
Salem Firemen say the fire had spread into the attic of the addition by the time they arrived. The fire was then knocked down quickly before it could spread to the rest of the home. However, there was mostly light smoke damage to the rest of the home.
Salem Assistant Fire Chief Bill Fulton says the cause of the fire is currently undetermined. A State Deputy Fire Marshall will review the fire scene on Monday. Fulton says there is nothing suspicious.
The fire was discovered at 12:18 Saturday morning. Firemen were on the scene for about two hours.
Odin Firemen were called for automatic mutual aid. Kell Firemen stood by at the Salem Fire Station in the event of another fire.
