State Representative Charlie Meier (R-Okawville) donated his annual pay raise given to lawmakers to local community organizations serving Southern Illinois.
Meier explains, “Politicians do not deserve a pay raise at a time when people in my district are struggling because of the reckless government spending,” said Meier. “The irresponsible policies coming out of Springfield are to blame for the record high property taxes, the skyrocketing cost of energy, and the high cost of living. I voted against the pay raise given to lawmakers, and chose to put my money where my mouth is and donate my raise to local community organizations that provide critical services to the folks in Southern Illinois.”
The salary increase given to lawmakers last year was about $5,000, and State Representative Charlie Meier donated over $5,000 to community organizations in Southern Illinois.
These organizations included BCMW Community Services, Chakota Therapeutic Riding Center, Community Link, Heritage House Museum, Holly House of Hope, Jaycees Charitable Trust, Trenton Base 215 Youth Center, and the Washington County Vocational Workshop.
Meier added, “It is an honor to serve my constituents, and I don’t do this for the paycheck. While Chicago Democrats vote to raise their pay, I’ll give it right back to my community.”
