A rural Vernon home burned to the ground on Tuesday.

Patoka Fire Chief Blake Hyde says owner Judy Thompson had been staying elsewhere and when she came to check on the home at 1663 Burk Road during the noon hour on Tuesday she found it on the ground with just a few flames still active from the fire.

It’s unclear how the fire may have started and how no one would have seen the fire while passing on Burk Road.

A state deputy fire marshal was called in to investigate the cause of the blaze.

Patoka Firemen had called Sandoval for mutual aid before realizing there was hardly anything left of the single story home. Because it was so far gone and the fire was nearly out, no water had to be placed on the fire.
