Former Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon has pleaded NOT guilty to seven counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving two underage girls.    The Not Guilty plea came during a Marion County Court appearance on Wednesday morning after he waived a preliminary hearing on the evidence as well as a formal arraignment.

A jury trial was set for September 8th.  Cannon is due back in court for a pretrial hearing on July 30th at ten am.

Cannon will stay in the Marion County Jail as trial proceedings continue, as a motion to reconsider being held without bond was denied by Judge Mark Stedelin.

Cannon’s attorney Brian Warnsman argued for Cannon’s release, noting he has no prior criminal history, is a long-time member of the community, and has medical issues.

State’s Attorney Tim Hudspeth told the court he did not know of any reason that Cannon would be unable or unwilling to follow the court order.  However, Hudspeth noted the ruling by Judge Amanda Ade-Harlow to originally hold Cannon without bond last week because there was no way to enforce or monitor any conditions the court may set without relying on third parties.

Stedelin said he agreed with Judge Ade-Harlow’s assessment in once again denying Cannon’s bond.
