Salem Township Hospital’s Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Caroline Boehne will be hosting a new monthly Diabetes Support and Nutrition Education Group.

Boehne says the group will meet monthly at Salem Township Hospital and participation is free and open to people of all ages.

“Point of it is to get people who have diabetes together and just provide nutrition education for it. I also have type one diabetes, so living in a rural community I know it can be difficult to find people who also relate to you. So I’m hoping to use my personal experience to meet others, relate with others, and give them both personal and clinical advice on how to manage diabetes.”

Boehne says the group is open to those newly diagnosed or have been living with diabetes for years with the monthly sessions providing nutrition tips, the opportunity to ask questions and support from others in the community navigating diabetes in their daily lives.

“There’s a lot of different ways you can manage diabetes through food. A lot of people think you need to eliminate carbohydrates to manage it, which is not necessarily true. There’s a lot of different ways to pair different foods together to meal prep to help manage it. There’s also just life style factors, like exercise, watching what you eat when you go out to eat. Also looking at the foods you are eating, like nutrition facts label reading.

The first date will be announced in the upcoming weeks. If you’re interested in joining the mailing list for monthly class notifications, please call 618-740- 1688, email ckboehne@sthcares.org, or visit the Salem Township Hospital website. (sthcares.org/medical-nutrition-therapy/#diabetesform)
