Odin Mayor Greg Smith says one of the three old adjoining buildings at Kirkwood and Perkins in downtown Odin has started to collapse.

While the Sugg building has been creaking and groaning, and part of a wall has fallen in, a decision was made at a Wednesday morning meeting not to proceed with immediate demolition since collapse was not believed to be imminent. As a result of the new assessment, both Kirkwood and Perkins Street have been reopened near the buildings. However, residents are asked to be observant and report any further failure of the building.

The village is applying for $20,000 in state money to help with the cost of demolition. The board has an estimate to tear down all three buildings of $90,000 from Pete Aydt of rural Centralia. A special meeting has been called for Thursday night to discuss what action should be taken .

Smith says the village owns all three of the buildings. The Sugg building was being used at one point by the Odin Renewal/Development Council and was earlier given to the village. Another building that had been bought for back taxes by a Chicago firm was donated to the ORDC and given to the village as well. The city purchased the third building for back taxes.
