A fire at a Jefferson County Housing Authority apartment building has resulted in one death and one critical injury.

Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse says the female resident that was rescued later died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the fire. An autopsy will be held on Thursday. The name of the victim has not been released until notification of family is complete. The male in the apartment was taken to a local hospital and later transferred to a St. Louis hospital for treatment of critical injuries.

The fire was in one of 20 units at 504 Short. Police assisted in evacuating the rest of the units of the single story structure. The fire was confined to one room of the one apartment. All received some smoke damage.

The State Fire Marshals office is investigating the cause of the fire.

Jefferson Fire provided mutual aid on the scene, while Kell and Woodlawn stood by at the Mt. Vernon Fire Station in the event of another fire.

It was first reported at 7:23 Tuesday night.
