The Salem Recreation Department’s Family Day in the Park drew a big crowd to Bryan Memorial Park on Saturday.

It started with 16 participating in the Fishing Derby at the Salem Reservoir.   A good crowd then enjoyed free food and refreshments from area churches, participated in various games and bounce houses.   Salem Recreation Director Jed Casburn says a number of organizations also provided information on their services.

“We’re very pleased today, because the weather is holding off,” Casburn said. “We were a little worried last night that we weren’t going to get it in, but we’re getting it in and everybody’s out here having a good time, so that’s what it’s all about.”

There were three age groups in the fishing competition.  In the 4 through 7-year-old group, Jaxon Kruep of Sandoval won for most fish caught at six while Jacob Berham had the longest first at 15 and a half inches.  In the 8 through 13-year-old group, Gavin Purcell won for most fishy at 34 and Tyrion Durham for longest fish at 15 inches.  In the 14 through 18-year-old group, Tyson Wilson won for most fish at 18 and Peyton Durham for longest fish at 17 inches.
