Salem Police arrested a 23-year-old Robinson woman who failed to report to prison on a Lawrence County felony conviction.
Police say Kyley Benton was one of three suspicious people who were reported to be taking items from the Elephant Storage Units on East Main Street. While the two men with her were quickly cleared, Benton allegedly gave police a false name twice before eventually giving her real name. At that point, police learned of the new warrant for failure to report to a penal institution. Court records indicate Benton was originally sentenced to three years in prison for violating terms of probation on a possession of methamphetamine conviction.
Benton was arrested on a new charge of possession of under five grams of methamphetamine after allegedly throwing a baggie of what field tested as meth behind her while talking to the officer. A new obstructing charge was added for allegedly refusing to give police her real name.
Benton was taken to the Marion County Jail to await further court action.
Police say the original concern about a break-in at one of the storage units was unfounded as the three had permission to be removing the items.
