Salem’s new city manager is on the job. Lisa Peck was sworn into office at Monday night’s city council meeting by Mayor Nic Farley.
Peck has been the city manager in Hannibal, Missouri, for the past six years and wanted the Salem job because it would bring her closer to family and friends in the Metro-East, where she grew up. She has 16 years of experience in municipal government and has a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Public Administration.
Peck says her first job will be getting familiar with the community.
“First impressions of the community are very positive. It looks like a nice community. Everyone I’ve interacted with is very nice and very kind. I’m still assessing the main needs and priorities of the community are. That will help formulate a game plan going forward. Fortunately, the city already has a strategic plan.”
Peck notes that while in Hannibal, she was able to get a large number of grants to help improve the community.
“I will say that the grant environment has recently changed. Several grants, basically all of the grants we had out, have kinda disappeared. I’m a little bit cautious about what is still going to be there that matches up with the need here.”
Peck says she is fortunate to be able to work a few weeks with retiring City Manager Annette Sola, saying she will have big shoes to fill.
Sola has moved back upstairs at City Hall to her former office in the Public Works Department.
“It’s just been really nice to be able to work on projects together. Just trying to make the transition as smooth as possible. We do still have a few things that we were working on that are ongoing so we’ll talk about those things. Just be ready to move forward. We have a lot going on, and I want to try and make sure she is as up to speed as much as we can possibly make it for her.”
Sola plans to begin her retirement shortly after the next city council meeting on June 16th.
