The Hungry Hearts free sack lunch program for the Salem area gets underway for the summer on Tuesday.
Marilyn Lewis is once again coordinating the program.
“Fiancés are pretty well stable on the program. When we come in need of finances, we will definitely let the community know. We serve around 109 kids each day. We have volunteers come in every week, starting May 27th this year and ending August 13th.”
Lewis says children from three to 18 are eligible to pick up a bag lunch every Monday through Friday. They just need to come to one of seven locations where meals will be dropped off daily from 11 to 11:20 am. They are the Salem Community Activity Center, Salem Mobile Home Park, Salem Library, Marion County Housing Units, Old Armory parking lot at Warmouth and College, 3M Rental Units at 2401 South Washington, and new this year, Grace Methodist Church at 116 East Schwartz downtown.
The making of the lunches has moved to the Grace United Methodist Church.
The lunches include lunch meat, peanut butter and jelly, or hot dogs, plus sides and a dessert.
Lewis says while the program is ready to go, they could still use volunteers for a few weeks. Those who would like to help can call Lewis at 618-308-0793.
The Hungry Hearts program in Iuka will also continue this summer. The distribution at the Iuka Grade School will begin on June 2nd and last for six weeks.
