Memorial Day Services are planned in both Salem and Centralia.
In Salem, the ceremony is set for eleven Monday morning in front of the Veterans Memorial in East Lawn Cemetery. The guest speaker is Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps. There will also be patriotic music. The program will conclude at the Salem American Legion with light refreshments. If it rains, the program will be moved to the American Legion Building.
In Centralia, the ceremony will be held at eleven at Hillcrest Memorial Park in the Garden of Honor Veterans Section. It is co-sponsored this year by the Centralia VFW. The guest speaker will be US Navy veteran Robert Shehorn. The program will also include a flag folding ceremony, followed by the laying of the wreaths, the three volley salute, and the playing of taps. If it is raining, the program will be moved to the Centralia VFW Hall.
The Centralia American Legion will begin the day with a six-mile community bike ride. It will begin at nine am, with entrants meeting and taking off from the American Legion Parking lot at 117 South Poplar. Those who participate will receive a shirt on the day of the ride.
