The South Central School District will end the year with a slightly higher deficit than originally projected.   The board Wednesday night made tentative changes to close out the fiscal year that Superintendent Kerry Herdes says will come before a public hearing at the start of the June board meeting.

“We started out knowing that we had a deficit of about $280,000,” Herdes said. “That did grow a little bit to $330,000, but we anticipated that with some of the purchases we’ve had. Money is coming in as we thought it would come in. We just made some purchases and improvements, and we have funds to cover that. Our fund balances are very healthy.”

The board also discussed summer maintenance that will include roofing work at the Kinmundy Grade School.

“We’re going to try to put metal on the front of the original building, one segment at a time depending on what bids come in, to match the new addition and gym. That front hallway will look really nice matched with the new addition.”

No price projections have yet been put together.

The board recognized and praised the school’s transportation department, especially bus driver Tammy Sigrist, for doing a great job with the safety of all students when her bus caught fire last month.  The board was extremely grateful to all those who assisted during this time of need which included Farina Police and Fire, St. Peter Fire, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, first responders, parents, and school staff.

Two resignations were accepted.  Lindsay Lash resigned as a 4th-grade teacher, and Sara Beth Williams as Middle School Special Education Teacher at the end of the school year.

The board named Courtney Daugherty middle school web tech, and Glen Wagoner and Levi Whitford as Bass Club sponsors.
