Salem Community High School Student, Walker Crank, has been honored with a “Life Saving” plaque for performing the Heimlich maneuver on a choking student.
On May 5th, SRO Creg Vieira was summoned to the cafeteria for a student who was choking. Upon his arrival the student’s airway was clear. Further medical care was provided to the choking student by Vieira and EMS after the incident.
Later, it was learned that another student, Walker Crank, had actually performed the Heimlich maneuver on this student, potentially saving his life. During freshmen year at SCHS, all students are taught CPR, AED, Heimlich, and how to stop bleeding.
“I noticed a kid, he was throwing up, and I saw him clutch for his chest,” Crank said. “I thought he was clearing the slobber off his shirt. Then I noticed he hit himself twice. I got up and met him out in the middle of the lunchroom, and I gave him the Heimlich.”
Crank was presented with a life saving plaque for his act of bravery in such a serious situation.
