It will be another busy summer for construction work at Salem Community High School.
Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering says more than three million dollars in improvements are planned as soon as school ends for the year.
“We’ve got tuckpointing and working on the glass blocks that are on the back side for three levels,” Detering said. “We have window replacement, and we’ve got two science labs that are being renovated, the chemistry lab and the biology lab. We’ve got exterior stucco work on the woodshop and auto shop, and then it’s all going to be repainted.”
Detering says the work is all being paid for from a spend down of surplus funds in the budget. The board Monday night approved a resolution to move a half million dollars from Working Cash Fund to Capital Projects. A public hearing has been set for the June 22nd meeting for additional half million-dollar transfers from both the Education and Building Funds to Capital Projects.
The board also gave approval to tentative budget changes that will be the subject of another public hearing on June 22nd. The biggest is a change in the cost of educating special education students outside of Salem High School that will cost $700,000 instead of $500,000. Detering reports the change is mostly the result of a daily cost increase for one student.
The board accepted a letter of retirement from Andrea Whitney who is a kitchen helper. Mike Pappas resigned as assistant cross-country coach.
Fine arts students Claire Gordon, Laci Howell, and Kaia Mitchell gave a presentation to the school board on their work.
