A 66-year-old Salem man has been arrested for reckless discharge of a firearm and resisting arrest after allegedly firing a pistol outside his home and then trying to get inside the residence.

Charles Huggins of the 1400 block of South College was taken to the Marion County Jail after being treated at Salem Township Hospital.

Salem Police say they were first called to check on the well-being of the man after the gunshots were fired.  A 911 call was made by occupants of the home after Huggins allegedly tried to gain entry.

Salem Police used shields to protect themselves when walking up to the door.   They allegedly found Huggins hiding behind a vehicle.

A scuffle with police followed before he was taken into custody.  The gun, which was not in Huggins’ possession, was later found at the front door.

Other occupants of the home told police Huggins had been hallucinating the past few days before the incident occurred around ten Saturday night.
