Fairview Heights Police Chief Steve Johnson says three officers were shot after being dispatched Saturday night to a report of a suspicious person prowling around a nearby residence.
After making contact with the man and discovering the issue was a possible domestic situation, the individual opened fire, striking three officers.
One Officer was shot in the face and underwent emergency surgery. She is in critical but stable condition. A second Officer was shot in the arm and was treated at a hospital for a broken bone. A third Officer appeared to have also been shot in the back, but the vest stopped it. This Officer was treated and released.
Two other Officers were treated at the hospital for injuries sustained fighting the suspect. Both were later released.
Johnson says the suspect is in custody and the gun was recovered.
Illinois State Police are leading the investigation to ensure impartiality.
